Shopping in Minsk focuses on the two main avenues that cross the capital (Nezavisimosty and Pobediteley Avenue) and their surrounding streets. These central streets house various department stores, shopping malls, open-air markets and small shops and boutiques.
The shopping landmarks in Minsk are GUM and TSUM department stores. Open in the 1950s they are still quite popular with the local residents. Also, quite similar to these centers, Na Nemige department store offers a wide range of goods. But in contrast to GUM and
TSUM this store is not focused so much on home-made products, it houses a lot of smaller shops with trendy goods on displays.
While there's some validity to the argument that prices for certain goods are higher than elsewhere (particularly CDs, electrical goods and clothing), if you spend time looking around there are still bargains to be had. Among others, there is a Prospekt CD store near
Yubileinaya Hotel.
There are a number of store chains in Minsk that major in foods (Sosedi, Desyatochka, Hippo, Rublevsky, Posttorg). If you intend to stay in Minsk for a while, you’d better find out which one is the nearest to your hotel. The well-known outdoor Komarovsky food market
in the central area is always full of bargains.
Such whole-sale markets as Zhdanovichi and Expobel located on the edge of the city can prove to be a worthwhile shopping destination providing one has time and (preferably) a vehicle. A nice place for a souvenir can be found near the WWII Museum, however, things are
quite pricy there.
Practicalities:
